GCSE: Magazines - 2009 candidates

This section will expand later in the year to provide more detailed information about this area of study. In the meantime, here is a reminder to current Year 11 students on what they have to prepare for this coursework module.

Essay

Explore the ways in which magazines target specific audiences .

Your essay MUST cover

  • Audience: who the readers are, what their interests are, how gender might affect the mode of address.
  • Media Language: how images, colours, fonts, writing styles etc. target the audience.

Use the coursework sheet as a guide, and make sure you use the correct terminology to discuss magazine layout.

Practical

Design the front cover for a new lifestyle magazine aimed at the gender opposite to your own (boys design a magazine for young women, girls design one for young men).

This may be designed on computer, or by hand using drawing or collage. It may include 'found' imagery (taken from other sources) although students aiming for high grades will want to create their own.

Assessment

Read the Section A mark scheme in student-friendly language.
