Soap Opera ResourcesThis scheme of work was, I believe, devised by Cecilia Foxall and adapted by David Allison.
Create a new teenage character for a soap opera, using this character handout as a guide. Watch at least one episode (two would be better) of each the following:
For each soap, you should pay close attention to at least two teenage characters. Make notes on their storylines, character descriptions, the way they are represented, etc. Consider the difference between British and Australian representations of teenagers. Devise a new Soap Opera for a teenage audience on behalf of Cloud 9 productions. Write a 200-word pitch outlining the plans for the series to Cloud 9. Include target audience, setting, character types etc. Use the Soap Opera rules as a guide. The EastEnders pitch may help you draft your own. Use a flow diagram to map out the basic plot lines for your episode. Make sure you have one significant event to make your Soap Opera entertaining. Take a look at this episode flowchart for an example of how to lay one out. Write a script for the cliffhanger ending of an episode. Write brief biographies for the characters in your cliffhanger. Annotate the script with notes on how you would direct it. Type up your soap opera script and annotate it with director's notes. The annotated script handout tells you how.
